Today was the beginning of the first Exoteric workshop.
This group of six is tasked with helping me refine worldbuilding information for my new setting, Moonshadow. A few people could not make it for real-time chat, so I instead delivered a short lecture on the worldbuilding style of Frank Herbert. Afterwards I fielded a few questions.
Now, when I first scheduled this event, I knew it would be the only event in which we would utilize the group chat in Signal. Signal isn't really suited for groups, and this group in particular needs a method where everyone can answer or question when it is most convenient to them. So, tomorrow, at 04:00PM (GMT-4) we will meet there briefly before moving the workshop over to Console. Console describes itself as the “Slack for Communities” and is rather perfect for this specific use case. It will allow members to respond when they are able through threaded chats, while allowing them access to all reference material.
Worldbuilding is incredibly important for longform fiction, especially that in the Fantasy or SciFi genres. Without building reference materials as you write, it would soon become a cluttered mess of broken continuity. If this setting is used for more than a single piece of fiction, then the time spent worldbuilding is literally worth more than gold.
The group will be discussing the schools of magic found in Moonshadow. The goal is to combine and merge wherever possible, without losing the provided clarity. A copy of my original notes in this area will be provided to each member, so that they may make the edits they feel matter, before we regroup to discuss the changes made, and reasons for, while coming to a consensus on what the final document should look like.
I look forward to speaking with you all then!
